FARO

Faro, Portugal has been placed on the map as a new tourist destination just recently as there are loads of flights coming into the bustling city, brimming with tourists ready for a piece of Portuguese sun, food and beaches. I started my solo trip in the city of Faro and was surprised as to how easy it was to meet new, friendly people and get to know a bit more about the country. I explored various locations over a week, took trains and caught local transport and taxis to experience all that Portugal had to offer. I am most delighted to share my pictures with you and am definitely planning on venturing back to see more of the Algarve and next time, the north of Portugal.

WHERE TO GO

Take a walk through the city centre and fashion street, where you can find loads of shops and cafes on every side. Look up to not miss the lovely tile patterns on the buildings as well as the balconies filled to the brim with flowers and plants. Step over to the marina to watch the boats dock and then make your way through to the old town to get a good view from the castle. Go back in the evening to get a good view at the restaurant, O Castelo and watch the sunset. Check out the Capela de Ossos Bone Chapel, which was built as a reminder by the Carmelite monks. The walls are constructed from femurs with mortar as well as skulls and other bones. The bones in this ossuary are the remains of 1245 monks whose bones were displaced when the obituary was built. Lastly, don't forget to head over to Faro beach to watch the surfers battle it out with the waves, people watch and enjoy the quiet view.

WHERE TO EAT

The Woods is all about fresh and healthy food choices! With a view over the marina, you can bask in the sunshine on the rooftop terrace while enjoying a freshly made juice. I chose the salmon sandwich with cream cheese and salad and the pineapple, mango, banana and apple juice... delicious!

Another place worth trying, for those who have a sweet tooth, is Choco & Nut creperie and gelateria. They make amazing waffles and crepes with an assortment of toppings to please all chocolate lovers.

Enjoy the sunset and views from O Castelo, where you can get a fresh local meal and sip sangria. Watch the planes depart and the boats sail on as you watch locals and tourists entertained by live music.

WHERE TO STAY

Depending on your budget and needs, there are plenty of holiday homes, shared/private apartments, hotels, villas and student hostels to choose from. Searching on Booking.com can provide you with a list of a range of places to stay and this is how I narrow down where I want to go and how much I want to spend. How gorgeous is this farmhouse, Vila Monte, which is not exactly in Faro's city centre, but on the outskirts, in Caliços, Moncarapacho, Olhão. It's simplicity and rustic charm is a perfect reflection of Algarve's environment.
